Twitter exploded the recently with the news that actress Jessica Chastain is in talks to play Marilyn Monroe in the biopic Blonde. Naomi Watts had previously been attached to the role but it seems that Chastain will be taking over.
Most of the comments about Chastain were positive but there were quite a few people who thought she wouldn't be right for the role. I have to disagree with this point of view; Jessica Chastain is one of my favourite actresses and has multiple facets to her acting ability. Just look at her acting credentials:
She played a dippy but lovable blonde in The Help...
...a determined and forceful CIA agent in Zero Dark Thirty...
...plus she managed to hold her own against the super-talented Tom Hardy in Lawless and even distracted me briefly from his cardigan wearing gorgeousness (seriously, how beautiful is that man.)
I think Chastain has the depth and range to play the mysterious Monroe and can definitely capture an element of the blonde bombshell's spirit. That's not to say that Naomi Watts wouldn't have been able to, she's a wonderful actress too, but I sort of feel that Chastain can do it a little bit better.
Plus, Monroe was a natural redhead, just like Chastain. A bottle of peroxide can work wonders.
I for one am excited to see Blonde with Chastain in the main role; hopefully she'll finally get the Oscar she deserves.
